On March 26, the People Matter Project, in partnership with ADRA Canada, hosted an Emergency Relief Benefit Concert for those affected by the war in Ukraine. All of the donations raised were directed to ADRA Canada to support their relief efforts in and around Ukraine.

When news broke of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the People Matter Project—a compassion-based ministry of the Nepean Seventh-day Adventist Church—met with church members who had immigrated to Canada from Ukraine to see how best our church could support those in need. It was then that the idea to host a benefit concert was agreed upon.

The event was a huge success. The concert started with a video from ADRA Canada highlighting the devastation of the war in Ukraine. Then, the audience was treated to 17 musical performances by young and old alike. Ukrainian families from Nepean were dressed in their native apparel, and some sang in their native tongue.

Steve Matthews, executive director of ADRA Canada, shared a pre-recorded special message highlighting the effects and devastation of the war. Both church and community members were deeply moved by the videos and the musical performances.

Special thanks to Randy Sidaoui, ADRA private sector engagement coordinator, who helped with the promotion; the AV team who livestreamed the program; the social committee who prepared great refreshments after the concert; all the performers, and last but not least, all who gave to this worthy cause.

Between the freewill offerings and online donations, the concert raised $7300. We praise God for the generosity of those who gave.

"The concert at Nepean SDA Church was timely and essential as it gave the church and community a chance to stand by Ukrainians in Canada while supporting the Ukrainian Crisis. What really stood out to me is the warmth and the tears shed at the concert. It’s inspiring. This is true faith in action," said Sidaoui.
